From Immigrant Kid to $70M Exit
The path from arriving in America with nothing to building a $70M company wasn't linear — but every step shaped the accelerator you're about to join.
The Immigrant Hustle
Arrived in America from China with nothing — no connections, no safety net, no English fluency. Worked minimum wage jobs while teaching himself to code. That hunger to build something from zero never left. It's the same energy he brings to every student who walks through the door.
Built Coding Dojo From Scratch
Started Coding Dojo in a small office with a handful of students. Grew it into one of the largest education technology companies in the world across 15 countries. The secret wasn't marketing or funding. It was an obsession with outcomes: every curriculum decision was driven by what actually got students hired.
The $70M Exit
In 2023, Coding Dojo was acquired for $70M. But Richard didn't build to flip — he built to last. The company hit $50M in annual revenue with real margins, real students, and real outcomes. The exit validated a decade of doing things the hard way: bootstrapped, profitable, and student-first.
MIT and What Comes Next
After the exit, Richard didn't retire. He became an MIT Sloan lecturer, sharing hard-won lessons with the next generation. Now with Idea to Launch, he's doing what no university can: teaching founders exactly how to go from concept to shipped product in weeks, not years.
